Amnesty International

Agnes Callamard, Secretary General

I am honoured to become a SheDecides Champion on behalf of Amnesty International because we cannot afford to be apart in our struggles. Together we must resist well-resourced campaigns against women’s rights and gender. Together, we must disrupt the construction of a new world order predicated on gender inequality and racial hierarchy. Together, we must transform laws and institutions that oppress, violate and silence. Your struggle is our struggle. Because abortion is a human right. Because humanity must win.

Erika Guevara Rosas

Senior Director of Research, Advocacy, Policy and Campaigns

Being a SheDecides Champion means standing with a bold feminist movement that defends the right of every woman, girl, and gender-diverse person to make decisions about their bodies, lives, and future, including the right to safe and legal abortion. It is about using collective power to dismantle inequality and drive transformative change rooted in justice. At Amnesty International, bodily autonomy is central to our mission. Without it, there is no true freedom or equality.

Fernanda Doz Costa

Director of Gender and Racial Justice

I’m proud to be a SheDecides Champion because I believe in the power of collective action to drive lasting change. Abortion is a human right, yet millions face stigma, violence, and criminalisation for seeking or providing care.

That our bodily autonomy is still debated by political and religious leaders reveals how deeply patriarchy shapes our world. No other health service faces such global opposition — this is about power, and we must keep building ours together.

Mariela Belski

Executive Director Amnesty Argentina

I have dedicated more than 25 years to empowering people to make informed decisions about their lives and their bodies. I have also worked for the decriminalisation of abortion in Argentina, to end gender violence and give young people tools for their empowerment.

I want my daughter and all young people to be able to live in a world where they can decide about their bodies and their lives, without a government deciding for them. Being part of SheDecides is the possibility to work towards that goal in a global way and with colleagues who have a great commitment to the issue.

An unstoppable movement: A global call to recognise and protect those who defend the right to abortion

Around the world, people who defend abortion rights are under attack. They include activists, advocates, educators, clinic escorts, accompaniers, doulas, and healthcare workers. They are exposed to stigmatisation, physical and verbal attacks, intimidation and threats, and are criminalised through unjust prosecutions, investigations and arrests. Despite the hostility and lack of recognition, they continue their work, helping people access their right to abortion. They are leading a truly unstoppable movement. Amnesty International calls on states to recognise the legitimate and essential role of all defenders working on the right to abortion, to respect and protect them, and to fulfil their obligations to ensure the right to safe and legal abortion is a reality for all.

Obstacles to Autonomy: Post-Roe Removal of Abortion Information Online

Social media companies can play a crucial role in facilitating people’s access to their reproductive health and rights, especially in settings where abortion is restricted or difficult to access. However, in the United States, where access to information about abortion is more important than ever, reproductive health and rights organisations are having their abortion-related content removed from platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok – with a spike in the removal of such content documented in the aftermath of the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
