Background

Fara is an abortion rights advocate and creative media activist, currently working with ARROW. Fara became a peer educator in 2017, and at the same time observed a distinct lack of digital creative content discussing sexual and reproductive health, and the right to decide. To remedy this, she decided to create For Youth Initiative Kuala Lumpur (FYIKL).

With FYIKL Fara focuses on making relatable and easily understood online content. Together with other team members and affiliated organizations like Reproductive Rights Advocacy Alliance Malaysia (RRAAM) and Asia Safe Abortion Partnership (ASAP) Fara and FYIKL created the first public contemporary art exhibition on Abortion in Malaysia, called Abort The Stigma.

She started her journey as a volunteer in sexual reproductive health and rights in 2016, and found her passion by doing outreach work for Negeri Sembilan Family Planning Association (NSFPA) during her studying. Her involvement continued in the field with volunteer work for Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Family Reproductive Health Association (SWP FReHA), and Federation of Reproductive Health Association Malaysia (FRHAM).

Currently, Fara is working as the Information and Communication Officer for Change at Asian-Pacific Research and Resource Center for Women (ARROW).

Tell us briefly why you are passionate about being involved with SheDecides?

“As a young activist, advocating for the issue of sexual reproductive health and rights is never an easy task. With the growing resistance against the cause, more support in every form is needed to ensure that the effort in fulfilling the right to decide can be achieved for all, especially in Malaysia.

SheDecides was founded in the spirit of solidarity after the Global Gag Rule, and I want to emulate that. Having the opportunity to be one of the 25x25, I am now ready to fight harder for this cause, hand in hand with my fellow youth to create the #NewNormal.”
